IIT Madras has topped the NIRF Rankings for Engineering category for the fifth time in a row. In the NIRF Engineering Rankings 2020 which was released by the MHRD on June 11, IIT Madras is ranked number one, followed by IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay in second and third positions. For IIT Delhi it is the second successive year it has been ranked second best. A total of 200 engineering institutes have been included in the NIRF Ranking 2020 for Engineering category. The list is dominated by the IITs, as they occupy nine of the top ten positions. The only institute outside the IITs that made it to the top ten is NIT Tiruchirappalli.

The MHRD has determined the NIRF rankings based on five parameters: Teaching and Learning Resources, Research and Professional Practice, Graduation Outcome, Outreach and Inclusivity and Perception.

NIRF Engineering Ranking 2020 – Key highlights

  1. IIT Madras tops the list: No surprise there as the institute was expected to top again.
  2. Top three remain unchanged: IIT Madras is followed by IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay in the next two positions. 
  3. IITs have nine institutes inside top 10: The IITs, considered the premier engineering institutes in the country, albeit the older ones, had a complete hegemony over the rankings, completely overshadowing other public and private institutes.
  4. NIT Tiruchirappalli bucks the trend: The only institute other than the IITs to make the top top is NIT Tiruchirappalli, which came in at number nine.
  5. NITs have four institutes inside top 20: Apart from NIT Tiruchirappalli at number 9, NIT Karnataka, NIT Rourkela, and NIT Warangal are placed at number 13, 16 and 19 respectively. 
  6. Anna University top among private institutes: The institute came in at number 14. Other top private engineering colleges include VIT Vellore at #15 and  Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham at #20.
