NIRF Rankings 2020 – Top Medical Colleges in India: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has released the NIRF Medical College Rankings 2020 on June 11. AIIMS, New Delhi as expected topped the rankings by a wide margin. The 2nd and 3rd spots went to PGIMER Chandigarh and CMC Vellore. NIMHANS who participated in the rankings for the first time took the 4th spot. SGPGI Lucknow came in fifth. Interestingly, apart from AIIMS New Delhi, no other AIIMS institute found a place inside the top 40 list published by the NIRF.
The NIRF Rankings of top medical colleges 2020 has been prepared by taking into account five parameters: Teaching and Learning Resources, Research and Professional Practice, Graduation Outcome, Outreach and Inclusivity and Perception.

- AIIMS New Delhi is head and shoulders over other medical colleges: The institute remains unchallenged at the top, and maintains a good 10 points lead over second placed PGIMER, Chandigarh.
- Top three: AIIMS New Delhi and PGIMER, Chandigarh are joined at the top by Christian Medical College, Vellore which came in third.
- NIMHANS takes 4th place after participating in NIRF Ranking for first time: Though one of the best medical colleges in the land and probably the best in the field of mental health and neurosciences, the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) didn’t participate in previous editions of the NIRF Rankings.
- Apart from AIIMS New Delhi, no other AIIMS college in top 40: While there are more than a dozen AIIMS institutes that have come up in the model of AIIMS New Delhi, none has so far managed to replicate the success of its predecessor.
- States with maximum colleges inside top 40: Tamil Nadu – 8, Karnataka – 7, New Delhi – 6, Uttar Pradesh – 4,
- Top medical college in the North East (NE): Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Manipur which came in at 38 rank is the top medical college in the region.
