New Delhi: The Director General of the National Testing Agency (NTA), Vineet Joshi has revealed that the NET exams – UGC NET and CSIR NET – will be conducted after July 2020. The decision to delay the exams has been taken in view of the prevailing COVID-19 situation, as the large student congregation at exam centres would make social distancing impossible and thus contribute to the spread of the virus.
The Director General said that they are in constant touch with the organisation with whom they are conducting the exam to jointly come up with a contingency plan. Once a blueprint is in place and things relating to COVID-19 get normal, new exam dates would be announced.
If one goes by what the director said, there is a possibility that the exams could be postponed even further, as things as of now hinge on the ever evolving COVID-19 situation.
Moreover, even if the exams are conducted in July as suggested, there are logistical issues to be taken care of to ensure the safety of students, office bearers, and security stuff. There are also concerns regarding allotment of exam centres, especially those located in red zones. Will these exam centres be clubbed with other centres, or some other methodology will be adopted to overcome the situation.
It is important to note here that exams like BITSAT are now going online, wherein students have the option of taking the exam from the comfort and safe confines of their homes. Exams will be proctored using AI technology.
It is unlikely that NET exams will go online in such short notice, so it will be interesting to see how travel related concerns of students are addressed.
